Details of the Disease

There are different types of glaucoma, which means that there are also different forms of manifestation and evolution:

Primary open angle glaucoma is overlapping, subclinical, silent, and its initial manifestations can be very common: discrete eye pain, frontal headaches, occasional foggy vision or simply frequent changes of corrective crystals. If this disease is not diagnosed and treated early, a good part of the vision can be lost before the person is aware of the problem. This type of glaucoma tends to occur in families and the risk is greater if you have a father or grandfather with this condition, usually appearing after 40 years.

Acute or closed angle glaucoma is what produces the popularly known “nail prick”, a very intense pain caused by a rapid, severe and painful elevation of intraocular pressure. Most people with this glaucoma will have a dilated pupil, redness and swelling in the affected eye.

Secondary glaucoma can appear at any stage of life, and is conditioned to previous pathological conditions: traumas, surgeries, inflammatory eye diseases and systemic diseases, as well as the use of certain medications such as corticosteroids. Having one of these antecedents as premise, is that after the ocular hypertensive picture is installed with alterations in vision, painful discomfort, redness, etc.

Congenital glaucoma appears from birth or in early stages of life, being sometimes hereditary. Infanto-juvenile glaucomas appear in the early years of childhood and youth, are dangerous and silent, affect both eyes, alter the visual field and reduce vision irreversibly.
